What to do if your property was damaged during snow removal operations

sidewalk plow

If your property has been damaged as a result of Town winter operations, specifically that of the sidewalk plowing operations, please notify the Town to ensure your property is on the list for repair this spring; repairs are not carried out prior to spring unless a critical safety hazard has been created.

Throughout the year, the Town, along with the contractor of sidewalk plowing, compile a list of owners who file a complaint about sidewalk plow damage. Additionally, the contractor adds restoration needs according to their own observations reports from their staff (restoration is not just triggered by complaints). Property damage that may have occurred due to Town plows is also compiled for spring repairs.

It is worth noting that with the numerous freeze/thaw cycles this winter, the restoration list is expected to be larger. Typically, the frost sets around December, and once that ground is frozen, the plows don't do much damage.  With all the thawing and rain in between cold cycles, the ground has been unusually soft, and the areas near sidewalks are carved up easily with various equipment.

The Town and the contractor both budget for restoration in the spring from winter activities every year. This is a planned, expected activity.

Safety is always first, and trip hazards in the road allowance are identified and prioritized for repair.

To submit your property’s damage as part of the restoration process, please contact Christine Tonon, public works administrative assistant, at ctonon@pelham.ca.
