Town of Pelham receives Canadian Award for Financial Reporting

Pelham, ON – The Town of Pelham has been awarded the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its 2019 annual financial report. The report was submitted for consideration in 2020.

The Canadian Award for Financial Reporting Program was established to encourage municipal governments throughout Canada to publish high-quality financial reports and provide peer recognition and technical guidance for officials preparing these reports. Its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

"We are very excited to receive a Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for the Town of Pelham's first Annual Report for 2019," said Teresa Quinlin, treasurer and director of corporate services. "Our goal is to publish an easily readable and efficiently organized annual financial report, its contents conforming to program standards; communicating the Town's financial picture, enhancing an understanding of financial reporting by the Town, and addressing user needs."

Impartial Canadian Review Committee members have judged the annual financial report to meet the program's high standards, including demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" designed to clearly communicate the municipality's financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report. 

Highlights from the 2019 report include updating and developing financial policies such as reserves, debt, and cash management, establishing an audit committee and a utility sustainability committee, and developing a capital asset strategic policy 

Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) advances excellence in government finance by providing best practices, professional development, resources, and practical research for more than 21,000 members and the communities they serve.
