FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 18, 2018
Pelham, ON– The Town of Pelham, in conjunction with the Pelham Seniors Advisory Committee, is hosting a free active living fair on Tuesday, September 25, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Meridian Community Centre.
The fair features a variety of activities, made up of three main components: physical activities, social activities, and nutrition and wellness. Booths, displays, demonstrations and presentations for each of these three areas will be set up throughout the centre.
The Town of Pelham is a World Health Organization Age Friendly Community, and the new Meridian Community Centre is a designated Seniors Active Living Centre, making both the Town and the centre an ideal place to host the many activities and information booths set up for Pelham and neighbouring residents.
“This active living fair will showcase some of the many ways seniors can make full use of this amazing new facility,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn. “The Meridian Community Centre is designed for people of all ages and all abilities. Pelham’s seniors have deserved an active living centre for many years and we are pleased that this new Community Centre finally addresses that need.”
Information booths from a variety of vendors will be set up, including: Ageworks, Alzheimer Society of Niagara, Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being, Community Support Service of Niagara, Connect Hearing, Fonthill Lions, Hanover Holidays, Hear Again Doctors of Audiology, Kwik Fit Niagara, Lifemark Fonthill, Movement Unlimited, Niagara Bruce Trail Club, Niagara Region Seniors Community Programs, Ontario Ministry of Finance, Osteoporosis Canada, Pelham Public Library, Town of Pelham, Pelham Seniors Advisory Committee, Seniors on the Move, Solus Support Services, The Community of Lookout Ridge, Villa De Rose Retirement Residence, and Wellspring Niagara.
Activities throughout the day include: public skating, pickleball demonstrations, a transit seminar, exercise workshops, and an introduction to the walking track at the community centre. Attendees are asked to bring their skates and indoor, non-marking shoes if they are participating in the activities that require them.
"The upcoming seniors fair has something for every older adult in Pelham who is interested in staying active,” said Bea Clark, member of the Pelham Seniors Advisory Committee and fair planning committee. “The Pelham Seniors Advisory Committee is pleased to be the co-host for this event, the first of many that are planned; join us, try something new, learn something new, have lunch with your friends and make some new ones."
Registration is not required and Pelham transit is free to seniors attending the fair. The dial-a-ride program is also free to seniors during the day. More information on Pelham Transit and its services, including dial-a-ride, can be found at www.pelham.ca/transit.
A light lunch and refreshments will be provided from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at no cost.
