Rural roadside mowing program begins June 14, 2021
On Monday, June 14, the Town of Pelham will begin its rural roadside mowing program.
The program addresses the grass that grows along roadsides, mostly in front of agricultural properties and naturalized areas outside of the Urban Boundaries. However, there are a few locations inside the urban boundaries that are also maintained through this program, such as the ditch on Pelham Street.
The service is completed through a contractor, operating with the equipment required to cut the steep slopes of roadside ditches. The current operating budget for this program allows for (2) two cuts. The initial cut occurs in late spring to mow from the road to the bottom of the ditch. This is to control weeds and invasive species and to improve road drainage and sight lines for the travelling public.
In recent years this has also helped control ticks for pedestrians and cyclists utilizing rural roads.
The second cut occurs in the fall to mow from the road edge to the municipal property line (where mechanically feasible).
Drivers are asked to take extra caution passing the equipment and pedestrians stay well back until making eye contact with the operator.
