Pop-up patios back on the menu in 2021

press release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 4, 2021

Pelham, ON – The Town of Pelham will help local restaurants this season by supplying, delivering, and taking away picnic tables for their pop-up patios at no cost to the business.

The Town continues to work with local businesses as they recover from the impacts of COVID-19. Providing free tables and allowing more extensive patios with a zero-dollar application fee helps these critical businesses offer their services in increased capacity.

“The Town has a surplus of picnic tables that, because of the pandemic, will not be fully used this season,” said Mayor Marvin Junkin. “Because some businesses may not have the infrastructure to support the pop-up patios, we are pleased to provide some help to local businesses at no cost to them.”

Temporarily waiving the requirement of up to six parking spaces for restaurants as pop-up patios during the pandemic in 2021 will support local businesses and is consistent with the provincial government’s directive to provide flexibility to these businesses.

Additionally, Pelham has a Sidewalk Encroachment Policy that allows restaurants to encroach on the municipal right-of-way provided they have the appropriate insurance. Approval of sidewalk patios under the Sidewalk Encroachment policy is managed through the Clerk’s Office, and there is no fee associated with this permission.

It is anticipated that most pop-up parking lot patios will occur on private property and be subject to meeting Public Health and Provincial licensing requirements related to food service and serving of alcohol.

Businesses that would like to receive picnic tables for their pop-up patios should contact the Public Works Department at 905-892-2607 x332.
