FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 20, 2018

Pelham, ON– The wait is over. The Meridian Community Centre in Pelham has officially opened its doors.

As of 7 a.m. on Friday, July 20, community members, user groups, and neighbours had access to the 143,000 square foot facility, with the first two users walking through the door at 7:04 a.m., heading straight for the walking/running track.

“We’ve been looking forward to [this day],” said Bill McInerney along with walking partner Pat O’Hara. “We walk every morning – we usually walk outside on the nice days but cool days, inclement weather, and the winter, we’ll be here for sure, but today we had to come get a few laps in.”

Dubbed “the place for moments that matter” in Pelham, the Meridian Community Centre features state of the art equipment and design that facilitate activity for all ages.

Featuring adaptable and multi-purpose community rooms, a double gymnasium, an indoor walking/running track, two NHL-sized ice surfaces, concessions, a retail space, a spacious and comfortable atrium, office spaces, free Wi-Fi, and much more, the facility offers social, cultural, and active opportunities.

During the hours of operation (7 a.m. – 10 p.m. seven days a week) all spaces that do not require renting will be fully available. While at the centre, if you have questions about the rental spaces, or to book a space, visit the information desk located on the main level.

A successful sneak peek open house was held on July 14, with 860 people touring the facility before its doors officially opened. A few days later, it was announced at Pelham Town Council that the $3 million dollar fundraising goal had been exceeded. The Community and Seat Naming campaign are still available for those who wish to contribute. More information can be found at: www.ourmcc.ca.

“This is a great day for our community,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn, who, along with his wife Carol, walked their first mile on the track. “For years, the community has voiced their desire to have a space for families and friends of all ages to enjoy and grow in both socially and recreationally. I believe this amazing facility offers everything our community has said it needs.”

The 2018 Greg Campbell Memorial Paperweight lacrosse tournament, happening July 20-22, is the inaugural event for the building.

A grand opening will take place in September and specific details will be shared with the community via print and online promotions in the coming weeks and months.
