Pelham receives nearly $350K in latest round of provincial COVID recovery funding

press release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 5, 2021

Pelham, ON – The province of Ontario announced on March 4, 2021, that the Town of Pelham would receive $347,890 as part of the province’s 2021 COVID-19 Recovery Funding for Municipalities program.

Overall, the province is investing $500 million in the program the help municipalities offset the unprecedented operating cost pressures due to the ongoing pandemic.

“The provincial government continues to hear, and answer, the call for assistance from municipalities all over Ontario as the financial pressures of this pandemic become evident,” said Mayor Marvin Junkin. “This funding will allow the Town to continue to provide the programs and services Pelham residents have come to expect.”

Operating or capital budgets can access the funding, the latter allowing for the continuation of planned capital projects that may be deferred due to the pandemic. The level of funding was determined by the proportion of COVID-19 cases in Niagara from January 1 to February 18, 2021.

“This is wonderful news that the Provincial government is providing financial relief to municipalities as a result of the impacts of the pandemic for 2021,” said Treasurer Teresa Quinlin. “The operating pressures are constantly changing because the Town is impacted by provincial emergency restrictions. I applaud the provincial government for acknowledging these pressures and providing funds to help the Town continue to provide excellent services and programs and to allow us to proceed with planned capital projects.”

Funds will be received in two equal installments in May and November 2021.
