Pelham Fire Department Prepares for Fire Prevention Week
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 6, 2017
Pelham, ON – October 8-14 is Fire Prevention Week and this year’s key message is “every second counts, plan two ways to get out”.
The Pelham Fire Department has been educating the public about the importance of fire safety since its inception in 1923. The Fire Department held an education session on Oct. 5 at the Pelham Farmer’s Market and will hold another on Oct. 14, tied into their charity barbeque at Giant Tiger in Fonthill.
The event on the 14th runs from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and will feature fire trucks, the promotion of fire safety, and interactions with firefighters, all while raising money for Pelham Cares.
Fire Prevention Week’s key message this year is a reminder that, in the event of a fire, every second truly does count.
“Generally, when a fire occurs in a home, residents may only have three to four minutes to escape safely,” said Will Underwood, Pelham’s fire prevention officer. “This is due to extreme amounts of smoke that is produced from the fire which flows throughout the home faster than the fire.”
The Fire Department encourages residents to create and practice home escape plans as well as to ensure that all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are in working order and on the appropriate levels of your home. This being that smoke alarms are on every level of your home and carbon monoxide alarms are outside all sleeping areas.
