Pelham community centre comes in $705,949 under budget
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 5, 2018
Pelham, ON–During yesterday’s Council meeting, the Meridian Community Centre Oversight Committee reported that the project was delivered on-time and under budget by $705,949.
Heralded as a near-unprecedented achievement, Mayor Dave Augustyn and Council acknowledged the committee’s efforts along with the collaborative efforts by several groups.
“When Council approved the Community Centre in April 2016, some residents were concerned about overall project costs and construction timing. The Committee’s report last night that the Centre was opened on time and under budget helps satisfies those concerns,” said Mayor Augustyn. “It is basically unheard of to have a public project of this size delivered on time and under budget. Thank you to every member of the committee, staff, Ball Construction, the architect at Petroff, everyone involved – this is absolutely outstanding work.”
The savings of over $700,000 were largely due to Ball Construction's value engineering approach to managing the project. Value engineering is a systematic method to improve the "value" of goods or products and services by using an examination of function. Value, as defined, is the ratio of function to cost.
“It’s been a great pleasure and I thank you for the opportunity to do this,” said Committee Chair Bill Gibson. “It’s nice to be able to contribute to the community by doing this.”
Officially opened and operational on July 20, the Meridian Community Centre has already hosted several events in the facility, including its inaugural event, the Greg Campbell Memorial Paperweight Lacrosse Tournament.
An official grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. featuring a community open house, family activities, interactive demonstrations, and live entertainment. It will also include, an NHL Alumni game at 6 p.m. Information on the grand opening can be found at www.pelham.ca/mcc-grand-opening.
