More programming returns to the Meridian Community Centre

press release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 17, 2020

Pelham, ON – The end of September marks the return of many regular programs at the Meridian Community Centre (MCC), with several more planned in early October.

The MCC's gradual integration of services follows the Province's and the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association's guidance for facilities for sports and recreational fitness activities during COVID-19. Earlier in September, the walking track opened, and larger groups were permitted to enter the building and participate in activities.

Programs coming available are:

  • Ladies learn to play hockey: week of September 27
  • Stick and puck: week of September 27
  • Shinny: week of September 27
  • Public skating: week of September 27
  • Brock Fitness class: September 28
  • Pickleball: September 28
  • Chair yoga: week of October 4
  • Seniors Fitness: week of October 4

"We're pleased to be bringing these programs back," said Vickie vanRavenswaay, director of recreation, culture, and wellness. "Before we added additional programs, we wanted to ensure our processes and health and safety measures were working, and they are. Because of that, we can start more programming for our community."

Health screening continues to take place inside the building. As per the Regional mandatory mask bylaw, patrons must wear a face covering while in the building and not participating in physical or strenuous activities. Other than team sports, users must keep a two-meter distance from one another.

As of September 21, arena change rooms will be available; however, change room showers will not be operational. Change rooms must be empty within 15 minutes of users getting off the ice, and coaches are to remain with their team until the last player leaves. Skaters should arrive 15 minutes before their ice time and are encouraged to come dressed. Full teams, up to 50 users, are permitted on the ice.

Cleaning of player chairs, benches, and tops of pad boards occurs between rentals. As of September 21, one spectator per participant, up to 50 spectators, is permitted in the arena's pad. Spectators are required to distance and wear face coverings. The spectator area will be cleaned and disinfected regularly throughout the day.

In the Accipiter Arena, home to the walking track, the total number of spectators of on-ice users and users of the track will total 50.

Also opening are the MCC's multi-purpose rooms. Rentals are booked and accepted according to Provincial guidelines, and new occupancy numbers are in place. Tables and chairs will be sanitized and cleaned after each rental.
