Have your say on proposed waste collection service levels for the Region’s next waste collection contract

blue-grey-green-bag-sm1

This fall Niagara residents will have their chance to provide input on the proposed service level options for waste collection services in Niagara. Niagara Region oversees the curbside collection of garbage, recycling and organics throughout Niagara. By 2021, Niagara Region will start a new contract for waste collection (garbage, recycling and organics) for homes and businesses. Prior to the start of a new contract, the Region is consulting with Niagara residents, businesses and other stakeholders on proposed service level options.

Options being considered are:

  • Every-other-week garbage collection, with weekly recycling and organic collection, for all properties outside the Designated Business Areas.  Garbage container limits (bag/can) would double
  • Mandatory use of clear bags for garbage with optional opaque privacy bag (i.e. grocery bag) within the clear bag for all sectors
  • Establish a four item limit, per collection, for large items (there is currently no limit)
  • Discontinue appliances and scrap metal curbside collection
  • Change weekly garbage container limits for businesses and mixed-use properties located inside Designated Business Areas from seven to four, as a base service
  • Change weekly garbage container limits for mixed-use properties located outside Designated Business Areas from six to four.

The first open house will take place on Nov. 1 at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Community Centre, 14 Anderson Lane and they will continue throughout the month of November. At the open houses, residents and business owners will have the opportunity to hear a presentation on the options being considered and ask questions of staff. During the consultation period, residents and business owners have three great ways to provide their feedback on the options begin considered:

Visit niagararegion.ca/letstalkwaste to complete a short online survey

Attend an open house – meetings will be held across Niagara with one taking place in each municipality

Visit a community booth.

Surveys will be open until midnight on November 30.
