FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 14, 2019
Pelham, ON – Brock Godfrey, a retired educator with a specialty in anti-fraud, and recipient of the Superintendent's Award of Distinction from the RCMP, is coming to the Meridian Community Centre in Pelham on Wednesday, November 27, 2019.
Hosting two sessions, Godfrey’s focus is on identifying scams and what you can do to safeguard yourself.
The morning session, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., is a presentation aimed at seniors, covering mass marketing fraud, identity theft, romance, and other scams – specifically, how to avoid them. The afternoon session, from 1-2 p.m., tackles cyber security, passwords, anti-virus software, and more.
“It seems as though a new scam is popping up all the time,” said Julie Cook, recreation and wellness programmer. “These types of sessions are very valuable to our community, especially our seniors, but everyone can benefit. No one is immune to being a target of cyber or phone scams.”
Godfrey brings his presentation as part of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, formerly Phone Busters, a joint operation of the RCMP, the OPP and the Competition Bureau of Canada. They are the central agency in Canada collecting information and criminal intelligence on such matters as mass marketing fraud (i.e. telemarketing), advance fee fraud (West African letters), Internet fraud and identification theft complaints.
“I am a 22-year senior volunteer with the group and do most of their presentations in Southern Ontario,” said Godfrey. “In the last few years, I have made hundreds of presentations to a variety of groups.”
The sessions are open to everyone and are free to attend. There is an option to purchase lunch for $3, and those wishing to attend are asked to register through the Town’s registration link.
