Fenwick Streetscape Improvements Win Award

At a special ceremony on March 2, 2016, the Town of Pelham received a 2015 Niagara Community Design Award in Urban Design and Architecture for the Fenwick Streetscape Improvements.

Pelham achieved top honours for Public Realm Improvement, which recognizes excellence in design of the spaces between places, and represents a significant improvement to the public realm that effectively integrates with the surrounding buildings, is accessible, and contributes to the beautification and use of the area.

“We are both delighted and gratified to receive the 2015 Community Design Award for Fenwick Streetscape Improvements.” said Mayor Dave Augustyn. “Council and I deeply appreciate the members of the Downtown Beautification Committee and the Heritage Committee, the Planning Partnership, Stevensville Lawn & Landscape, Town Staff, sponsors, and the hundreds who purchased commemorative and memorial bricks – all who helped make Fenwick’s revitalization an award-worthy reality.”

The Fenwick Streetscape Improvements:

  • foster a sense of place for Downtown Fenwick through the use of distinctive paving designs, enhanced landscaping, retention of the historic flagpole, and improved opportunities for walkability and social interaction;
  • enhance the quality of the open space and public realm through the narrowing of pavement, widening of sidewalks, the addition of street trees and planting beds and provision of street furniture including benches, bicycle parking and waste receptacles.

The project further strengthens and directs investment to Pelham’s existing communities.

The community and stakeholders, including members of the Town Beautification Committee, helped design the Fenwick Streetscape Improvements. As a result of the streetscape improvements, Fenwick now has a vibrant and inviting place for public celebrations like the Downtown Fenwick Revitalization Grand Opening Celebration.
