Downtown Fenwick Road to be Covered in Sod for Green Street Challenge

road closure

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 10, 2017

Pelham, ON – Canboro Road in downtown Fenwick will come alive on Saturday, August 19, when the Town of Pelham hosts a Green Street Challenge, swapping the road’s usual asphalt for grass and creating a temporary park in the heart of the village.

The Challenge, which runs from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., is initiated through Come Alive Outside (a nonprofit organization) and transforms regularly paved roads into pop-up parks, providing a unique opportunity for children and families to get outside and enjoy unstructured play, as well as promoting the benefits of community’s green spaces.

Ten Communities throughout Canada have chosen to participate in the initiative in 2017. Pelham is the first in Niagara to hold the Green Street Challenge.

“Outdoor play and green spaces are essential ingredients to the wellbeing of our societies,” said Vickie vanRavenswaay, director of recreation, culture, and wellness. “This is a unique opportunity to partner with local businesses to encourage families to get outside, get active, connect to nature and enjoy the outdoors.  We are very grateful to Young Sod Farms for their huge contribution to the event.  At the end of the day, all the sod is being donated to Strive Niagara and a local family - Pelham truly is a creative and caring community.”

Come Alive Outside partners with the Landscape Ontario Horticultural Trades Association and its’ professional members across the province in order to create the awareness, intention and opportunity for people to live healthier lives outside.

Local business Young Sod Farms have generously offered to supply the sod and Dekorte’s Landscaping and Nature’s Own Landscape & Design have joined in to lay it and roll it up again at the end of the day. The Fenwick Firefighters Association will ensure the sod stays healthy by watering the sod once it’s laid.

Canboro Road will be closed to traffic for this event from 7 a.m. to approximately 7 p.m.  Please see the image of the map for the closure area.  All businesses will remain open and activities and games will be planned throughout the day for those to enjoy.
