Solar Eclipse 2024
On Monday, April 8, 2024, select portions of North America, including the Niagara Region, will experience a total eclipse. Pelham will experience the total eclipse between 3:18 p.m. – 3:22 p.m. The Town of Pelham recently conducted its annual emergency preparedness exercise jointly with Niagara Region which simulated eclipse-associated events. Council received report #2023-0215 and directed staff to make appropriate emergency preparations for the town and to proceed with providing a day camp at the Meridian Community Centre.
Centennial Park - Accessible Universal Washroom Addition
For the 2023 Capital Budget, Council approved FAC-06-23 Centennial Park Washroom Design and Construction pending grant confirmation to support the project. The Town received two grants to support the project for completion before the end of December of 2023. The two grants received included the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for $150,000; and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) for $100,000. The construction tender closed on October 11, 2023, with one submission.
Pelham Active Transportation Committee (PATC) – Canboro Road Rumble Strips
The Pelham Active Transportation Committee, a committee of council, encourages active transportation in Pelham. Cycling is considered an eco-friendly mode of transportation and recreational activity. The Town of Pelham currently has rumble strips installed on Canboro Road and the PATC has requested the potential removal of the rumble strips from Canboro Road, between Effingham Street and Vinemount Drive. Council directed staff to prepare a report regarding the rumble strips for their review and consideration in December of 2023.
Platform Tennis Club – Water and Sewer Connection
The Pelham Platform Tennis Club previously had connection to sanitary and water services through the network that supported the old Pelham arena, which were disconnected when the arena was demolished. Council directed staff to prepare a report for Q4 to review the costing and time required for the two options available for the reconnection of services: (1) providing services from Welland Road or (2) providing service from the new, adjacent development and directed staff to include funding for sanitary sewer and water service connection to the Platform Tennis Club Facility in the 2024 Budget, for Council’s consideration.
