Candidate information session for municipal and school board election

April 3, 2018 - The Ministry of Municipal Affairs is hosting a candidate information session in partnership with Niagara’s municipalities for anyone interested in running as a candidate, or becoming a third-party advertiser in the 2018 Municipal and School Board Election.
Information session details:
Date: Thursday, April 19, 2018
Time: 7 p.m.
Location: Gale Centre, 5152 Thorold Stone Rd., Niagara Falls.
No RSVP is required and the event is free to attend. There will also be an “election information fair” prior to the session starting at 6 p.m. where attendees can ask questions of staff from the Niagara Region, Local Area Municipalities and school boards.
As there have been changes to the Municipal Elections Act, the session will provide potential candidates with an opportunity to become familiar with:
- Role of council, municipal staff and school board trustees
- Role of Regional Chair, who, for the first time, will be elected by general vote
- Third-party advertising
- Nomination process
- Campaign period
- Candidate qualifications and disqualifications
- Candidate and third party advertiser duties
- General campaign rules and election finances
- Compliance audits and penalties
- Voters’ list, proxy voting, scrutineers, recounts and resources
Anyone who is interested in running in the 2018 Municipal and School Board Election is encouraged to attend.
The 2018 Municipal and School Board Election is Monday, Oct. 22, 2018. The candidate nomination period opens Tuesday, May 1, 2018 and closes at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 27, 2018. Third-party advertiser registration opens May 1, 2018 and closes Friday, Oct.19, 2018.
